On the forefront of research in learning spaces

CEFPI Mayfield Project 2014

A group of ten young professionals from backgrounds of architecture, design and education collaborate together in preparation for a year-long research program investigating educational design.

This is the Mayfield Project.

Daina Cunningham of NBRS+PARTNERS is a member of the Mayfield Project 2014 team that will work together to explore themes relevant to the design of educational spaces over the next year. Daina brings a wealth of knowledge to the team as the co-author of research publication 2050 The Learning Continuum (2011 NBRS+PARTNERS) in addition to involvement in a variety of educational projects with NBRS+PARTNERS.

The team will then lead a major presentation at the CEFPI (Council of Educational Facility Planners International) Regional Conference in May 2014. The over-arching theme of the conference will be Inside Out, Upside Down, Joined Up.

The team’s initial meeting involved lengthy discussion over current educational spaces and their limitations in being adaptable to emerging teaching styles and new technologies. Much of the discussion focused on the importance of having a clear vision for the learning campus, whether they are school or tertiary spaces, which is only possible with close collaboration between all stakeholders – architects, planners, teachers, users and community.

It is evident that students learn from their surroundings and the world; that learning is not restricted to an organised environment. To achieve seamless integration between the world and learning environments is essential.

The 2014 Mayfield Team are excited to have the opportunity of partnerships with people of various backgrounds, a valuable asset in considering the complexities of learning environments.

Stay posted to hear research developments and design solutions.
