The Astor, Apartments
Completed in 1923, The Astor, Macquarie Street, Sydney, designed by architects, Esplin & Mould, was the first company title residential apartment building in NSW and recognised for its prestigious Sydney address.
Although remedial works to the exterior had been undertaken in the 1990s, they failed to arrest the ongoing deterioration of the windows. The project involved condition survey, conservation management planning, documentation and carrying out of conservation works including the replacement of steel framed windows with new steel frames, and the repair and repainting of principal facades. NBRS+PARTNERS worked collaboratively with other consultants in a review and advisory role to the Board of The Astor Pty Ltd and prepared the Conservation Management Plan, Statement of Heritage Impact and details of the works to this significant heritage listed building.
The legacy of the project is a conserved facade with renewed windows that, with maintenance, will prove serviceable for many decades to come. It has restored a level of comfort, utility and delight to those who live at The Astor, and restored its place as landmark apartment building on Macquarie Street.
